SUMMARY:2026 Maiben Lecture
DESCRIPTION:For 136 years\, the Nebraska Academy of Sciences has hosted an annual meeting designed to bring the scientific community across the state together to ‘share their science’. \nIn conjunction with the meeting\, Dr. Deborah Bathke\, a research associate professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln\, climate scientist\, and Nebraska’s state climatologist\, will deliver the annual Maiben Lecture titled\, “Shifting Extremes: Understanding Nebraska’s Changing Climate and Preparing for What Lies Ahead\,” at 4 p.m. \nThe lecture free and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:Roots\, Research and Resilience: Exploring the Future of the Nebraska Sandhills
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Ann Vinton will present “Roots\, Research and Resilience: Exploring the Future of the Nebraska Sandhills\,” for the 2025 Maiben Lecture at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences 2025 Annual Spring Meeting at the UNL East Campus Union. In her presentation\, she will blend ideas from natural and social science to explore the status and future of the Nebraska Sandhills as one of the most intact grasslands in the world. \nDr. Mary Ann Vinton grew up as a member of a five-generation family of cattle ranchers in the Nebraska Sandhills. She did an undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Wyoming\, a MS at Kansas State University\, and a PhD in Ecology at Colorado State University. She is now Professor of Biology and Director of Environmental Science at Creighton University in Omaha. Dr. Vinton teaches courses in biology\, ecology\, and environmental science. Her research program revolves around the ecosystem consequences of human impacts on plant communities\, such as impacts wrought by invasive plants or the demise of once-common plants. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, NASA-Nebraska Space Grant\, and Nebraska Environmental Trust\, and involves close mentoring of undergraduate research students. Recently\, she has returned to the Sandhills to reconnect with her roots and study how landscapes are changing with management and climate. Dr. Vinton inherited a section of land on the Dismal River from her mother and “Kinkaided” by her great\, great aunt\, Mary Crouch. The section is known as the “Aunt Mary” and is surrounded by family. She has used the Aunt Mary as a study site for biodiversity work and analyses of the landscape diversity inherent in the wet meadows and dry dunes in the Sandhills. In talking with friends and family\, Dr. Vinton has become interested in the factors that affect land management and how decisions and attitudes are often not based on science or economic optimization\, but often involve feelings of obligation and connection\, stemming from long relationships between one another and land. \nVisit neacadsci.org for more information.

SUMMARY:2023 NAS Annual Spring Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Nebraska Academy of Sciences on April 21 for the 2023 Annual Spring Meeting on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan University. \nThe meeting will be a HYBRID format with both in-person and remote-Zoom access for presentations and participation.  This Meeting provides an excellent opportunity for students\, faculty\, and scientists to share their research results with peers and colleagues across Nebraska. Concurrent sessions will host selected themes across a range of scientific disciplines. \nFollowing lunch\, Dr. Jason Bartz will present “Prion and Prion-like Diseases\,” for the  2023 Maiben Lecture. \nDr. Bartz has been investigating prions for over 30 years. Dr. Bartz’s research has investigated interspecies transmission\, pathogenesis\, and the biology of prion strains. Dr. Bartz’s group has developed novel whole animal and in vitro models of prion disease and\, more importantly\, the results from these systems have changed the paradigm of how a protein-only infectious agent can perform complex biological tasks. More recently\, Dr. Bartz has expanded his studies to include the interaction of prions with the environment by leveraging his expertise in prion biology with collaborators in environmental engineering resulting in fundamental discoveries on how prions interface with the environment influences the biology of prion disease. Dr. Bartz is currently on the editorial board of numerous peer-reviewed journals including PLoS Pathogens and the Journal of Virology\, has chaired numerous national and international prion advisory groups and serves on numerous grant review panels\, both in the United States and abroad. \nPlease contact nebacad@unl.edu with questions and visit neacadsci.org for more information \nRegistration is required.
