DESCRIPTION:Nebraska Cures is inviting teens to participate in their second annual teen public service announcement (PSA) competition designed to promote science and engage in science advocacy.  The competition theme is the “Climate & Health Challenge.”  The competition challenges teens to create and share PSAs on social media that educate about the impact of climate change and extreme weather on physical and mental health. \nEntries can be made in three categories: pictures\, infographics and short videos (60 seconds or less). Entries can be made on Facebook\, Instagram\, TikTok and Twitter and must use #ClimateHealthChallenge and either #NebraskaCures or tag the organization.  $50 prizes will be awarded in each category.  Winners will be announced in early May. \nParticipants must be 13-19 years old and live in Nebraska.  Additional details and a full list of rules are here.

Yet there are millions of venom toxins in nature that remain unexplored. Biomedical scientist and inventor Zoltan Takacs collects snake\, scorpion\, jellyfish\, and other venoms from around the world. Back in the lab\, using cutting-edge genomics\, he creates combinatorial venom libraries to identify leads for novel medicines. \n\n\nDriven by his childhood passion\, he’s traveled to 155 countries and become an aircraft pilot\, scuba diver and real-life survivor\, roughing it in a hammock deep in the Amazon or in remote Pacific islands. In his mission\, he survived charging elephants\, pirated waters and a series of snake bites and venom spit in his face (all his faults he admits). DESCRIPTION:Dr. Janet Gilsdorf will share stories based on her book\, Continual Raving: A History of Meningitis and the People Who Conquered It\, of how scientists across the 19th and 20th centuries defeated the deadly brain infection meningitis — not through flawless research\, but through a series of serendipitous events\, misplaced assumptions\, and flawed conclusions. The result shows not just how a disease is vanquished\, but how scientific accomplishment can sometimes occur where it is least expected. \n Registration for Zoom is required. \nDr. Gilsdorf\, an alum of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine\, is the Robert P. Kelch Research Professor Emerita in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan and an infectious diseases physician at C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, where she participates in the diagnosis and management of pediatric patients with complex infectious diseases\, and in the clinical training of medical students\, pediatric residents\, and pediatric infectious diseases fellows. She has published over 100 articles of original research\, most centering around the epidemiology\, molecular characteristics\, and pathogenesis of Haemophilus influenzae. She is a past president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) and received the PIDS Distinguished Physician award in 2012. In addition to her scientific writing\, she is the author of Inside/Outside: A Physician’s Journey with Breast Cancer (U of Michigan Press)\, Ten Days (a novel from Kensington Books)\, and Continual Raving: The History of Meningitis And The People Who Conquered It (Oxford University Press).  She has published several personal essays in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Emerging Infectious Diseases\, Health Affairs\, and The Examined Life. In 1999 she was awarded the Journal of Internal Medicine Award for Prose. \n  \nThe Richard B. Davis\, MD\, PhD\, History of Medicine Lectureship brings national experts to the UNMC campus to discuss the history of medicine\, in support of special collections at the McGoogan Library\, including rare books and works on the history of medicine. The lectureship is supported through an endowed fund given by the late Richard B. Davis\, MD\, PhD (1926-2010)\, faculty member at UNMC from 1969-1994 and professor emeritus of internal medicine at UNMC. Dr. Davis and his wife\, Jean\, provided support for this lectureship out of his long-standing interest in the history of medicine.

SUMMARY:Omaha Science Cafe - "Understanding the Aging Brain"
DESCRIPTION:Join Gaelle E. Doucet\, Ph.D.\, Director of the Brain Architecture\, Imaging and Cognition Laboratory at the Boys Town Institute for Human Neuroscience\, for the April 4 Omaha Science Cafe as she presents\, “Understanding the Aging Brain\,” 7pm at the Slowdown.  \nIt is clear that people do not age at the same rate. Scientists are still trying to understand why there are differences amongst individuals\, but factors such as physical activity and education seem to play a significant role in these changes. At this Science Café\, Dr. Doucet will present findings from her scientific research and share what we know about the impact of age on the brain and what can influence it. \nGaelle E. Doucet\, Ph.D.\, is the Director of the Brain Architecture\, Imaging and Cognition Laboratory. For the last 10 years\, Dr. Doucet’ research interests have involved the investigation of the brain’s architecture and its relationship to cognition in health and disease. She is a cognitive neuroscientist with expertise in functional MRI (fMRI)\, and particularly on resting-state fMRI. Her research has involved the use of multi-modal MRI to characterize the brain functional organization and she has applied this technology to answering questions about the impacts of disease on brain functional organization. \nDr. Doucet received her doctoral degree in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Caen (France) in 2010. Her work provided a description of the healthy brain intrinsic organization underlying the complex relationships between brain networks at rest in young adults. This finding offered one of the first schematic models of the brain’s functional architecture and provided a normative framework for the study of intrinsic interactions between brain networks. During her postdoctoral fellowships\, she further investigated the impact of neurological (i.e.\, epilepsy) and neuropsychiatric (i.e.\, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders) disorders on the brain architecture. \nPrior to joining Boys Town National Research Hospital\, Dr. Doucet was an assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York\, NY). She has been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to identify the brain networks in aging populations. This work aims to provide the first reliable brain functional atlas for older adults. By mapping the brain networks underlying late adulthood\, this work has the potential to elucidate how dysfunction of the brain networks contributes to neurodegenerative conditions. At Boys Town Hospital\, she plans to expand this research by focusing on age-related changes on brain activity and cognition\, from childhood to late adulthood. \nDr. Doucet has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited more than 1000 times. \nScience Cafés address the latest hot science topics in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. The events  are open to everyone (21 and older). \nUsing plain language\, an easygoing atmosphere and inclusive conversation\, these interactive events are welcoming and comfortable for people with no science background. Each presentation is followed by a question-and-answer period.

SUMMARY:Denham Harman\, MD\, PhD Biomedical and Gerontology Lectureship
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is pleased to announce the 2023 annual visiting professorship named for the internationally-known scientist\, Denham Harman\, MD\, PhD. Dr. Harman’s research on aging was based on the theory that free radicals\, highly reactive molecules freed in the normal chemical process of living\, cause aging and disease through their destructive actions in cells and tissues. Joining UNMC faculty in 1958\, his work done at UNMC established the role of antioxidants in cancer and heart disease. Dr. Harman’s research led to international recognition and awards. Dr. Harman was named chair of the section of gerontology and geriatrics UNMC when it was established in 1973\, the first of any American medical school\, and continued his research as professor emeritus\, internal medicine\, at UNMC until 2010. \nThis years lecture “Synaptic Resilience and Translation to an Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy” will be given by Frank Longo\, MD\, PhD.\, the George E. & Lucy Becker Professor and Chair in the department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. \nDr. Longo’s  interests include translational research in neurodegenerative disease therapeutics\, providing care in the Stanford Memory Disorders Clinic\, and mentoring medical students and other trainees. He was the recipient of the inaugural Melvin R. Goodes Prize for Excellence in Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery in 2015\, and his team’s work on Alzheimer’s therapeutics was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 2016. \nThis free event is live in person or available via zoom (password 581835 ).

DESCRIPTION:Jaipreet Virdi\, PhD\, will present the 14th annual Richard B. Davis\, MD\, PhD\, History of Medicine Lecture on April 14 from noon to 1 p.m. The lecture\, titled “Negotiating Normalcy: Deafness Cures in American History\,” will be held via Zoom (registration required).    \nDuring the late nineteenth century\, entrepreneurs began to glut the direct-to-consumer medical market with a plethora of remedies they professed could miraculously cure deafness. They claimed their medicines and machines fostered a world of unbridled optimism for providing “hope” to deaf ears. Even as medical specialists denounced these “cure-all” treatments as quackery in its finest form\, the messages of restoring hearing would transfer over to the hearing aid industry.   \nFocusing on the marketing of cures for deafness—hearing trumpets\, electrotherapy apparatuses\, and hearing aids—this presentation unravels the many ways deaf people sought to restore or gain hearing. This history provides a broad context for understanding the lived experiences of deaf people and how cultural pressures of normalcy significantly stigmatized deafness.  \nDr. Virdi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Delaware. A historian of medicine\, technology\, and disability\, her research focuses on the ways medicine and technology impact people with disability. She is author of Hearing Happiness: Deafness Cures in History (University of Chicago Press\, 2020)\, co-editor of Disability and the Victorians: Attitudes\, Legacies\, Interventions (Manchester University Press\, 2020)\, and has published articles on diagnostic technologies\, audiometry\, and the medicalization of deafness.  \nThe Richard B. Davis\, MD\, PhD\, History of Medicine Lectureship brings national experts to the UNMC campus to discuss the history of medicine\, in support of special collections at the McGoogan Library\, including rare books and works on the history of medicine. The lectureship is supported through an endowed fund given by the late Richard B. Davis (1926-2010)\, MD\, PhD\, who was a UNMC faculty member from 1969 to 1994 and professor emeritus of internal medicine at UNMC. Dr. Davis and his wife\, Jean\, provided support for the lectureship out of his longstanding interest in the history of medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Autism self-advocate Temple Grandin\, PhD\, will share her unique perspective on animals when she headlines the 2024 Nebraska Science Festival this spring. \nA professor of animal science at Colorado State University\, Dr. Grandin also is a pioneer in improving the handling and welfare of farm animals. \nDr. Grandin will kick off the festival March 26 with her presentation\, “Visual Thinking and Animal Behavior.” The 7:30 p.m. presentation will be at The Garden Theater\, 3125 Oak View Drive in Omaha. Grandin’s talk will help attendees better understand animals in their sensory-based world as well as provide insights into solving problems. General admission tickets are free but required for admittance; tickets (first-come\, first-served basis) will be available March 1 via Eventbrite. The program is suggested for ages 12 and older. \nThe Nebraska Science Festival\, which runs throughout April\, features an array of science- and technology-related activities in communities across the state – all designed to make science accessible\, interactive\, relevant and fun for all ages. \nDr. Grandin’s achievements are remarkable. At age 2 she had no speech and signs of severe autism. She learned speech after many hours of therapy and intensive teaching. Later\, inspired in part by her high school science teacher\, she pursued a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer. Half the cattle in the U.S. and Canada are handled in equipment she has designed for meat plants. She has developed animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry and consulted with companies on animal welfare. Widely published\, she continues her research at Colorado State University and teaches courses on livestock handling and facility design. \nIn her latest book\, Navigating Autism: 9 Mindsets For Helping Kids on the Spectrum\, Dr. Grandin presents nine strengths-based mindsets necessary to successfully work with young people on the autism spectrum. Her book Animals in Translation was a New York Times best seller\, and her book Livestock Handling and Transport is in its fourth edition. In addition to a popular TED Talk\, she has authored Thinking in Pictures\, Emergence Labeled Autistic\, Animals Make us Human\, Improving Animal Welfare: A Practical Approach\, The Way I See It\, and The Autistic Brain.

Davis\, MD\, PhD\, History of Medicine Lecture\, hosted by the McGoogan Health Sciences Library. \nDr. Baruch’s lecture\, “Humanities as Critical Medicine: The Necessary Practice of Uncertainty\, Adaptability and Discovery\,” will encompass his more than 30 years as an emergency room physician and the emotions\, difficult choices and moral challenges he has experienced. Dr. Baruch is a writer\, ER physician\, educator and professor of emergency medicine at Alpert Medical School of Brown University\, where he serves as the director of the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Scholarly Concentration. \nThe Davis Lecture will take place on Tuesday\, April 16\, from noon-1 p.m. The lecture will be a hybrid event located at the UNMC Sorrell Center\, room 2014\, and via Zoom (registration required). Zoom captioning will be available\, along with an American Sign Language interpreter online. \nAs a practicing ER physician for more than 30 years\, Dr. Baruch has learned that caring for patients can feel like swimming in choppy waters teeming with uncertainty\, crests of emotions\, difficult choices and moral challenges. She has a PhD in Preventive and Societal Medicine\, Master’s degrees in Spanish Language and Culture & Christian Spirituality and a graduate certificate in Maternal and Child Health. Regina loves to collaborate across disciplines\, colleges and cultures. She specializes in Indigenous research methods and works in partnership with public schools\, non-profit organizations\, academic institutions\, communities and tribes to promote health and wellness. \nAislinn Rookwood is a mother of two and public health specialist who grew up in between Polson\, Montana and Phoenix\, Arizona. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Promotion in the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She also serves as the Director of Programs for CityMatCH. In the College of Public Health\, she is the program manager for a research pathways program for underrepresented students. Megan will share traditional Indigenous insights into a variety of plants\, their medicinal benefits\, and practices of building relationships with the natural world. The discussion will highlight the importance of food sovereignty\, urban gardening\, and community sustainability. The Luminarium will have a selection of seeds to take home so you can practice what you’ve learned and begin growing your own medicinal garden!   \n \nThis workshop is open to anyone interested in sustainable living\, herbal medicine\, and urban gardening – no prior gardening experience is necessary. \n\nThis event is included with any daily admission ticket or with a membership.
