DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free exhibit opening highlighting the research about the “human ecology of Nebraska’s tallgrass prairie” conducted by history majors at Doane University. Special items from Doane University’s Perkins Library and Archives will be on display\, including the botanical watercolors of Mary Doane\, the sister of Doane’s founder\, Thomas Doane. \nMaterials related to Goodwin Sweezey and the Doane Herbarium will be present\, which Goodwin created while a faculty member at what was then known as Doane College. The exhibit\, which runs through April 2022\, will also focus on the work Spring Creek Prairie does to preserve the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. \n“The Flora of the Nebraska Tallgrass Prairie” is part of the Humanities Research for the Public Good grant program by the Council of Independent Colleges and supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Schramm Park is launching a new nature exploration program geared towards homeschool families. \nEach month\, join an outdoor educator for a guided hike on the Schramm Park hiking trails. As we explore\, we’ll ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. You’ll have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nREGISTER IN ADVANCE to reserve a spot: https://forms.gle/Vjg38GEqXHgGEkLFA. The cost to participate is $4 per child and $5 per adult per program. This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Family pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. The April 11 lecture will cover Butterfly Observation Over the Years. \nJoanne Langabee and Holly Hofreiter have been doing research for Lauritzen Gardens and Fontenelle Forest for several years. They will talk about their experiences\, common butterflies of our area and how to ID them by behavior and markings. They’ll also share research data which shows the fluctuation of butterfly populations\, and they will discuss what can contribute to these changes. You’ll also learn how you can help to increase butterfly numbers in your yard. \nSnacks and coffee are available before the presentation. This program is for adults ages 55 and up who enjoy learning about the natural world. \nThis event is free for members or with daily admission.
