SUMMARY:The Prairie Astronomy Club Meeting - ‘What’s in Your Library?’
DESCRIPTION:Since November PAC programs have covered How to Buy a Telescope\, How to Use Your Telescope\, and AL Observing Programs. \nSo we have the equipment\, we are learning to use it\, and now we have a List and a Plan. \n… but where do we begin to look? \nFrom simple free sky apps to extensive in-depth hard copy charts and atlases\, there is a wealth of knowledge available to help us find our list of objects in the sky. April’s program will provide a basic overview of many of the print and digital tools PAC members use to guide us through our journey in astronomy. Members will share some of what’s in their library so attendees can get a hands-on feel for what’s available. \n  \nUnless otherwise noted\, PAC meetings are held at Hyde Memorial Observatory in Holmes Park South on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. Meetings are open to the public.

SUMMARY:North Platte Hatchery
DESCRIPTION:The North Platte Hatchery is open to the public and tours may be scheduled during normal working hours. Hatchery information is on display at the hatch house. \nThe North Platte Fish Hatchery opened in 1943. The facility utilizes the adjacent Nebraska Public Power District irrigation canal to feed 43 earthen ponds\, water that ultimately is returned to the canal after being used for fish production. \nThe North Platte Hatchery produces a variety of coolwater and warmwater fish species including regular production of walleye\, white bass\, blue catfish and channel catfish. On demand\, the hatchery also produces yellow perch\, black and white crappie\, wiper\, striped bass\, bluegill\, muskellunge\, tiger muskie\, smallmouth bass\, largemouth bass\, northern pike\, sauger and saugeye. North Platte hatchery staff also makes annual collections of walleye and white bass eggs and milt from regional water bodies. \nIn addition to the hatchery\, this property houses the Aquatic Conservation Facility where our team conducts mussel propagation research\, as well as other aquatic work. \nTo prevent the spread of disease and reduce stress to fish\, some areas of the facility may not be open to visitation. Contact the hatchery in advance to schedule a tour. \n

SUMMARY:Butterfly Royalty of Nebraska Prairies: Monarchs and Regal Fritillaries
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservation Nebraska for an engaging presentation on monarchs and regal fritillaries — two butterfly species of great conservation interest that are vital to ecosystem services like pollination.\n\nJoined by Dr. Ted Burk\, Creighton University Professor of Biology\, who will share insights into the biology and population trends of these butterflies. He’ll also discuss findings from more than 25 years of surveys tracking their populations and flower visitation patterns across Eastern Nebraska’s tallgrass prairies. Attend in person at UNO’s Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (Room 230) or virtually via Zoom. In‑person attendees may park in Lot E.

SUMMARY:Omaha Science Cafe - "A true crime history of forensic anthropology: How famous true crime cases led to the development of forensic anthropology"
DESCRIPTION:Join Katie East\, PhD\, D-ABFA\, forensic anthropologist\, for the April 30 Omaha Science Cafe as she presents\, “A true crime history of forensic anthropology: How famous true crime cases led to the development of forensic anthropology\,” 7pm at Vis Major Brewing Company. \nThanks to television and true crime\, forensic anthropology is more popular\, and sensationalized\, than ever. What most fans don’t know is that the study of human skeletons is an important scientific tool in criminal investigations that has developed alongside real true crime cases. Join Dr. Katie East to learn about the unexpected origins of this fascinating field through real stories about true crimes that marked pivotal moments in this history of the field. \nDr. Katie East is a forensic anthropologist\, university instructor\, and science communicator. By day\, Katie investigates skeletons as a Board-certified forensic anthropologist\, and by night (and weekends)\, she captivates public audiences with the wonders of science and history. \nWith over a decade of experience in museums\, laboratories\, and field settings\, Katie brings a wealth of knowledge about anthropology\, archaeology\, and science to audiences of all ages. For Katie\, being a scientist isn’t just about wearing a lab coat—it’s about curiosity\, passion\, and empathy. \nScience Cafés address science topics in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. The events are open to everyone. \nUsing plain language\, an easygoing atmosphere and inclusive conversation\, these interactive events are welcoming and comfortable for people with no science background. Each presentation is followed by a question-and-answer period.
