DESCRIPTION:NE SciFest is challenging everyone in Nebraska to show their love of science by participating in a 30-day exercise challenge that will collectively take us to the moon. The challenge will start April 1\, and end on April 30. Any type of exercise will count (miles\, minutes or steps) and ALL exercise will be converted into steps for the challenge. The club presently has over 80 members with a wide variety of interests ranging from simple naked-eye sky gazing to deep-sky objects\, variable star observing\, and the use of computers. The club holds monthly meetings open to the general public on THE LAST TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH\, unless the date conflicts with a major holiday. The meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. at the HYDE MEMORIAL OBSERVATORY located in HOLMES PARK in southeast LINCOLN\, NEBRASKA. Each meeting consists of a short business session\, planning for upcoming events\, and one or two short programs followed by refreshments and conversation. \nJoin the club on April 30 at 7:30pm\, as they welcome Robert Teeter\, founder of Teeterscopes LLC\, who will talk about optimizing Dobsonian telescopes and some of the interesting builds he’s done over the years.  Formed in 2002\, Teeter’s Telescopes has been custom building dobsonian telescopes ranging from 8″ F/6 ton 24″ F/3.5 and nearly every aperture and focal length combination between.

DESCRIPTION:“Our Wildflowers” is a collection of paintings by Betni Kalk that are inspired by wildflowers from Nebraska and beyond. The exhibit\, at Lauritzen Gardens\, features vibrant depictions of the insects that rely on these flowers\, tranquil tree groupings framed by sunlight\, and dramatic cloudscapes that hover over the Nebraska landscape. Each piece invites viewers to connect with the beauty of nature and the delicate ecosystems that surround us. \nARTIST BIO\nBethany “Betni” Kalk is an artist\, designer\, muralist\, advocate of community art and professor of art and design. She was born in Canada and at age three her missionary parents moved the family to Papua New Guinea (PNG) where they lived for 10 years. She lived in the States for high school\, college and graduate school where she studied graphic design\, painting\, and drawing. When not teaching\, she explores the natural landscapes of other countries\, and visits different regions of the U.S. to and from artist residencies. \nShe has exhibited in numerous locations including Lexington\, Milwaukee\, Minneapolis\, New York\, Omaha and San Francisco. She has received numerous grants and residencies around the U.S. including Sitka Center\, San Juan National Forest\, the Anderson Center and the Pine Needles Program through the Science Museum of Minnesota. \nShe currently lives in Omaha\, NE with her partner and two children where she teaches graphic design at Creighton University in the Computer Science\, Design and Journalism Dept.

DESCRIPTION:Get ready to go birding by participating in the Birds of a Feather program at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis is a program for birders of all ages and levels. We introduce a different birding topic each session to begin the program. When weather permits\, we will head outdoors for a hike or time in the birding area. The program runs approximately 60-90 minutes and is offered on select Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. on a monthly basis. \nOn April 1\, participants will learn more about spring migration patterns and discover when and where to find migrating birds as the spring season begins! \nThis program is free but a 2025 park entry vehicle permit is required.
