SUMMARY:The Lyrid Meteor Shower Late Night Star Party
DESCRIPTION:The Lyrid Meteor Shower is going to be a GREAT ONE this year thanks to a near-moonless night and a weekend timeframe. \nFor this event\, we will combine our regular star party\, i.e. viewing planets\, galaxies\, nebulae\, and star-clusters with staying up LATE into the early morning hours when the meteor shower’s radiant is high\, and more/brighter shooting stars are likely. \nThe Lyrid Meteor Shower is caused when the Earth passes through the debris leftover by Comet Thatcher. The highpoint of the meteor shower is predicted between the 21st and 23rd of April\, and may yield as many as 10-15 meteors per hour. Although rare\, the Lyrids are known for surges that bring rates of up to 100 meteors per hour! \n• The event will begin Saturday evening at 10PM\, and the sky-park will remain open until 2AM Sunday morning.\n• Bring your own lawn chairs\, blankets\, pillows\, etc.\n• Bring your own cooler\, refreshments and snacks.\n• Feel free to come anytime between 10pm and 2am. Lay back\, relax\, and stay as long as you would like.\n• Our billboard light on at the corner of Raymond Rd. & 98th St. will go out and stay out around 11:30pm. Be sure you know our exact location / coordinates if you are joining us later in the morning hours.\n• Although the meteors will be the big show for the evening\, we will have our telescopes trained on dozens of beautiful objects throughout the evening. \nHOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! \n• No Registration\n• Open to Everyone\n• Arrive Anytime Between the Times Given\n• Stay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\n• No Park Permit Required\n• No Telescope Needed – You are welcome to bring your own equipment! \nBranched Oak Observatory is located 20min northwest of Lincoln\, Nebraska\, near but not inside the Branched Oak Lake and Recreation Area. You can find a Google Map to Branched Oak Observatory here.

SUMMARY:Sunday Science with The Bad Astronomer\, Phil Plait
DESCRIPTION:Come out to Site-1 Brewing on Sunday\, April 23 at 4pm to hear from The Bad Astronomer\, Phil Plait. \nJoin Phil as he talks about his new book\, “Under Alien Skies.” Following his presentation\, you are invited to ask Phil all your science questions. Books will be available for purchase at this event. \nHave you ever wondered what it would be like to travel the universe? How would Saturn’s rings look from a spaceship sailing just above them? If you were falling into a black hole\, what’s the last thing you’d see before getting spaghettified? While traveling in person to most of these amazing worlds may not be possible—yet—the would-be space traveler need not despair: you can still take the scenic route through the galaxy with renowned astronomer and science communicator Philip Plait. \nPhilip Plait\, PhD\, is an astronomer\, sci-fi dork\, TV documentary talking head\, and all-around science enthusiast. The author of Bad Astronomy and Death from the Skies!\, he writes the Bad Astronomy newsletter and lives in Colorado. \nThis is a free\, all ages event. Tickets are required due to venue capacity.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Astronomer Phil Plait
DESCRIPTION:What would it be like to sail above Saturn’s rings\, watch an eclipse from the Moon or stare in awe as sunset brings a million brilliant stars to the sky of a planet in a star cluster? \nAstronomer and renowned science communicator Phil Plait will take you to these distant worlds during an upcoming appearance in Kearney. \nHe’ll speak 7 p.m. April 24 at the Merryman Performing Arts Center\, 225 W. 22nd St.\, and sign copies of his new book\, “Under Alien Skies: A Sightseer’s Guide to the Universe.” The event is sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Kearney chapter of Sigma Xi\, The Scientific Research Honor Society and the UNK College of Arts and Sciences. SUMMARY:Meet a Meteorologist
DESCRIPTION:Grab a beer and get your questions ready for our “Meet a Meteorologist” event with KETV NewsWatch 7’s very own Caitlin Harvey. \nCaitlin will be at Site-1 Brewing (Farnam location) on April 25 at 7pm to talk about her education\, work and all things weather at this free event. After Caitlin’s talk\, you will have the chance to have all your weather and meteorology questions answered by the expert. \nCaitlin Harvey is a Meteorologist with KETV NewsWatch 7 in Omaha. Growing up just outside of Kansas City\, Missouri\, Caitlin is no stranger to severe weather and dramatic temperature changes. Her earliest weather memory came at the age of 4\, when a tornado warning forced her family outside into the storm cellar. Though no damage came from the warning\, that memory sparked a fascination and passion for weather and to learn what caused such severe weather. \nCaitlin attended the University of Missouri in Columbia and earned a degree in Soil\, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences – with an emphasis in Atmospheric Science\, in 2016. Caitlin interned with NBC affiliate KOMU and went on to work at KMIZ in Columbia\, Missouri and KDRV in Medford\, Oregon. \nOutside of work\, Caitlin is part of a proud “geek” family. She is happily married to her husband\, Skip\, a comic book creator and artist\, and a proud pet parent to Starbuck\, Maeby\, Gerbie\, and Noodle. She enjoys swimming\, water skiing\, sailing\, cosplay and karaoke. \nThis event is all ages\, and FREE\, though a ticket is required due to space capacity. Reserve your tickets here. \n
