After the indoor session\, we’ll head out on a hike through the prairie\, where you’ll get to participate in hands-on activities such as learning about the Eastern Spotted Skunk Community Science Project. Then\, we’ll wrap things up indoors with a lively trivia game\, fun goodies\, and helpful resources to take home. Come for the science\, stay for the fun — and be prepared for a bit of stink! \nFree admission\, but registration required. \nRegistration is now open. DESCRIPTION:Interested in becoming a Discovery Leader for Spring Creek Prairie? Join us for a free (and fun) training session on Tuesday\, April 9\, from 12:00-3:30 p.m. We’ll provide the training and lunch\, you volunteer your time and passion. \nDiscovery Leaders help lead school and daycare field trips into prairie\, woodland\, and pond habitats. Our approach to education programs is exploratory\, with hands-on investigations and open-ended activities to encourage participants to make observations and come to their own conclusions. Discovery Leaders encourage exploration\, model good observational skills\, and ask guided questions. Field trips mainly occur spring and fall. SUMMARY:The Flora of the Nebraska Tallgrass Prairie: Past & Present
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free exhibit opening highlighting the research about the “human ecology of Nebraska’s tallgrass prairie” conducted by history majors at Doane University. Special items from Doane University’s Perkins Library and Archives will be on display\, including the botanical watercolors of Mary Doane\, the sister of Doane’s founder\, Thomas Doane. \nMaterials related to Goodwin Sweezey and the Doane Herbarium will be present\, which Goodwin created while a faculty member at what was then known as Doane College. The exhibit\, which runs through April 2022\, will also focus on the work Spring Creek Prairie does to preserve the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. \n“The Flora of the Nebraska Tallgrass Prairie” is part of the Humanities Research for the Public Good grant program by the Council of Independent Colleges and supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
